The Beginning
THE
HOUSE OF FRIENDS
ONE WORLD, ONE PEOPLE, ONE FAMILY |
The founders of
the House of Friends visited
the Sonoran Desert in Arizona in 1998. They found
themselves in the quiet of the desert, a place that
inspires one to feel the peace and solitude around
them. However, their eyes were opened to see many
of their brothers and sisters on the border of the
United States and Mexico living in poverty.
The founders began to feel an increasing conflict with a life of many blessings
and seeing so many challenged to survive each day. Working with other peacemakers
they could see the desert as a place of natural beauty and as a spiritual oasis,
yet they were fully aware of the poverty and injustice that filled its landscape.
After many months of personal reflection and with continued encouragement
from friends and one another, they sought to find
inner peace and to find themselves in response as
witnesses for peace and justice.

After years of involvement on the border of the United States and Mexico, their
experience gave them a deeper awareness of the difficult realities confronted
by people to survive. This experience helped them to see the unjust inequities
of those who have and those who have not.
So, this was the humble beginning
of their journey. A wish to give their life over to
the service of others, to nurture a common passion
within, to make a difference in this world, to reverence
life and with renewed hope begin to reconcile a world
that seems to have lost its way. |
